I don't know. Maybe there was an outbreak of disease or something on one of the teams. The Book of Finney only has a brief one paragraph description of the 1900 season:
Maybe it was the first football season for Millsaps, and they were just learning to play. Who knows?
quote:
E.A. Chavanne took over as coach for the second time in 1900 (he also served as commandant of cadets), and it fell to him to be linked with the greatest form reversal in LSU history. The Tigers opened the season with a 70-0 victory over Millsaps, a game highlighted by ten goals after a touchdown by O.W. McNeese. Three weeks later Chavanne took the team to Jackson, Mississippi, for a return match with Millsaps where it suffered a stunning 6-5 defeat. McNeese scored the LSU touchdown (worth five points) but missed the extra point. Between these two unusual clashes with Millsaps, the Tigers took a 29-0 whipping from Tulane and this time it was LSU which was saved by darkness from a more lopsided beating. The Tigers had possession of the ball only three times and managed to gain only 36 yards. Tulane, on the other hand, ran up 380 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Nick must have coached the first game and was hired away by Princeton and Les must have coached the second game. (please feel free to let your sarcasm meters run wild).

That's how scoring was in those days. Feast or famine, no in-between.

Well, I would hope they canned this EA Chavanne fella's arse after this embarrassment. You know the Rant, in all its teletype glory in 1900, would have demanded as much.

Of course. He was just a temporary replacement who was busy being a commandant anyway. LSU got a new coach for the next season.

I think ringers were common then. Millsaps may have hired a couple of good players in the interim. Squads were rather small so a small change in personnel could make a big difference.
