I know everyone here hates the Braves/Braves threads...but who would you pick for the final roster spot? Thurston or Conrad? I love Thurston this Spring Training and I've gotta go with him...what say ye?

Thurston is more talented, Conrad has more grittiness. I'm going Conrad.

I think Bobby is gonna take Thurston though just because he's an infielder and we will need more days off from our infield than we do our outfield

I don't think either would be expected to play much outfield- given Cabrera as the 4th OF, Hinske as a backup at the corner OF positions, and Infante being able to play pretty much everywhere. I think Thurston's experience gets him the nod over Conrad.

I'd take Conrad. But I'm sure Cox goes with Thurston and the experience...

as a hitter i like conrad..
as to adding a different element.. i like thurston's wheels and ability to cover more ground..

i guess i will go with the speed guy for the final spot.. something we kinda lack..

Have they announced the Opening Day starter yet?

Lowe

is right.

Aside from throwing a no hitter like 10 years ago, this guy has never been more than a #2 or #3 starter, and the Braves are paying him $15 million a year.

He's throwing well in his last spring training game.

Given up a ground rule double and home run in the 1st, 3 runs total

Pretty typical. That's Lowe though. Always gives up a lot of runs early. Fortunately it looks like the lineup is gonna be pretty strong 1-8 this year though, so hopefully they can outscore his crappy pitching.

just because Lowe didn't have his sinker working last year doesn't mean he cannot be an effective number one this year

He hasn't exactly been rolling this spring either...

How so? ST shouldn't be your basis of how the season should go ever but I'm looking and he's 2-0, pitched 18 innings, has 15 k's, 9 hits, 8 ER...that's not counting today's rough first inning I don't think

remember he isn't showing everything he has because it's spring

He has never really been a #1 though. He just isn't that guy. He's good for 14 or 16 wins and 10 or 12 losses and an ERA a little under 4.00 most years. He's a solid #2 starter when he is pitching well. Just waaaaay too inconsistent.

I'll bite and say Hanson will eventually be our number one...hopefully he will develop and by next season he will be ready

Way to go out on a limb

He doesn't have much developing to do, the dude dominated when he got called up last year. Ready to be the number 1 now and I guarantee you when the Braves make the playoffs, he gets handed the ball in either game 1 or game 2

But other than opening day when every teams number 1's are matched up against each other, the order doesn't really matter much in the season. Let's just hope he has a bounce back season and can cut that .301 BAA down because that's just ridiculously bad

Hanson just needs to get accustomed to throwing 200+ innings per year.

He threw 193 last year. Don't think this is gonna be much of a problem for him, he's durable
