Who have been the best players at LSU in the past 25 years or so?
Position by position who have been the best tigers (not necessarily pro careers). Here is my take
C-Brad Cresse
1B- Eddie Furnace
2B- Todd Walker (although tough...Morris and Fontenot)
3B- Pontiff (barbier was also good)
SS- Brandon Larson (Aaron Hill, Ryan Theriot...)
OF- Albert Belle
OF- Jared Mitchell
OF-Jeremy Witten
SP-Ben McDonald
SP-Paul Byrd (early 90's there were tons of others)
RP-Matty Ott
This is just my take and I am sure I missed a couple people and misspelled some names, but interested to see other peoples lists

Eddie Furniss was as good of a college hitter as you'll ever see.

Not even close to being on this list.
Mike Koerner, Wes Grisham, and Armando Rios (was always getting the big hit) just to name a few off of the top of my head.

Chad Ogea was the ace of those staffs. He won something like 14 straight SEC openers. Also, Mike Sirotka belongs on the list of top pitchers.

Jason Williams was at the top of many LSU career records.

Russ Johnson was an outstanding player. Curtis Leskanic was great, too.
Mestepay (sp?) Was very good, and one of my personal favorites.

That's how the original poster spelled it. I'm certain the "hot" comment was a joke.

I find it hard to believe that jared mitchell isnt even close to being on the list...maybe not on the list, but not even close?

LOL....I was just messin' with the initial poster. I forget their names altogether sometimes, so no offense intended.
Never will forget Furniss, though. Great player, and a very nice guy. We ran into him and his Dad at a seafood restuarant called Swab's in Brusly. Good people.

Last 25 years? that had to be about '83 ish?
What about Lyle Mouton? I though that this guy could have been even better had he left hoops alone.
He hit the furthest home run I ever saw while in Ohmaha.

Jared Mitchell was a 1st round draft pick because of potential. He was a 2 year starter for LSU. He never hit lefties well in his time at LSU until the last 5 games of his career. People here on the rant wrongly debated taking him out of the lineup at times last year (I reemphasize wrongly, because he needed to be in the lineup). But the point still is, out of the last 25 years in LSU baseball, there are many outfielders who had great careers (more than 2 years) that it would have never been considered to take them out of the lineup in half of the games.

Walker is one of the all time greats in college baseball history. Morris and Fontenot were great but Walker was in a class of his own.

Jared Mitchell was the CWS MVP...pretty stinkin good. 2nd in steals for LSU history for a career. also pretty good. also 5th in nation in walks.
He got on base, he stole bases and he made things happen. One of the most electric players in probably LSU history. Good defensively with a solid glove and a good arm. Not too bad at the plate too. Hit .327. Started 3 years at LSU. Two CWS teams, winning one. He was very good.
Not even close is probably an overstatement. He might not be in the top three, fair enough, LSU has had some great players, but he deserves to be in the hunt

However, I stand my ground on Witten. He had one of the biggest at bats in LSU history, but not the career stats.

Didn't Russ Johnson play some 3rd also? I'd still put him at SS in front of the others, but just so you can have all both him and Larson. Russ Johnson needs to be on this list.
