Are Everson Griffen or Carlos Dunlap better than Ray Edwards?

Then why the frick don't we just offer the Vikings our first and throw out a decent contract extension? Edwards outperformed Jared Allen for much of the season last year when it came to the run and generating pressure. He would IMMEDIATELY upgrade our defense and really give it a shot in the arm when it comes to pass rush. I just don't understand why we wouldn't give up the last pick in the first round for a guy that is 25 and has PROVEN that he can not only bring the pressure, but play every down. It makes no sense to me why teams value draft picks so high but don't value young, proven players the same way.

Draft picks may present a risk but they also represent cheap labor. Unless you're picking in the top 10 in the draft, you can come away with a contract that is 50 to 70% the value of a veteran contract.
You can't have a team full of second contract veteran players due to cap restrictions; if you did his, the team would be made up of the aging, disabled, and under-performing types.
