In College teams always want to defer to the 2nd half, so they end up kicking if you win the toss.
In the NFL, teams that win the toss usually get the ball.

Until recently (maybe last year) NFL teams couldn't defer. They either had to choose kick or receive. That's why you saw the team that won the toss received. I'd like to see the stats on this since the defer rule went into effect.
