Basketball observations

I did a couple of these after the first few games so I guess I'll do one when things dont look so good.
UCONN looked bigger, stronger, faster, longer, more athletic pretty much outclassed us in every aspect. But some of this is to be expected with such a young team in their first real test. Tonight we really struggled in transition especially defensively. The team did not seem ready or did not look like they expected UCONN to take it to the hole like they did. In the half court we slowed them down some with the zone. I think that this will be good to use when we are at an obvious disadvantage down low as was the case tonight. Offensively - too much dribbling not enough ball movement. Guys trying to do too much on their own
Individually:
Chris Bass: should be the starting point guard on this team. Is faster, a better ball handler, and makes better decisions than Spencer. His play was a bright spot tonight.
Bo Spencer: first hopefully the injury is not too bad. Secondly, he needs to reel himself in some. Yes he might be the best scorer on the team but that does not mean he needs to do it all himself. When he is not shooting well he needs to look to create opportunities for other people off the drive. UCONN simply crashed in on his drives and the ball did not have a chance to get to the rim.
Taz: Taz is best when he steps into a shot or makes a one or two bounce move. He should not be handling the ball extensively and it was evidenced tonight. We need to find a way to feed him on the block or in the post where he can be most effective. I just don't see him being as effective hanging around the perimeter.
Storm: is the best player on the team at this point. Obviously needs to watch the fouls but that a result of the energy and effort he plays with. I can't say anything that I haven't said before. Storm looks great.
Harris and Green: Harris disappeared tonight. Got outmuscled and positioned down low. Green was a little better from a defensive standpoint bc he's a little thicker but his offense still leaves much to be desired.
Dotson: really doesn't bring much to the table at this point. At the least he needs to start being able to hit the open 3. I see Bass starting soon
Ludwig: when he first came in he played like a boy among men. Was completely outmanned physically and shyed away from it all. However, as the game progressed Eddie definitely got more aggressive and played with a little bit of attitude. He ended up making a few good plays. Still shows hesitancy to take the ball up strong but I think he grew up some tonight regardless
Overall a poor performance obviously. UCONN just used their size and aggressiveness to dominate us. This team will grow up a lot throughout the season and this will serve as a great learning experience. I expect to see some great progression and an exciting year ahead. We need to take care of the small things and play within ourselves and we'll be fine

I like CB at the point. His line tonight looked like a true PG. 2 assists, but more importantly 0 turnovers.
If Storm keeps working he is going to be a beast. 15 and 7 tonight, against those big bodies from UConn...

Menace Harris was bad tonight.

I said it in another thread, but Kinsley is better than Dotson and should be getting his minutes.

It certainly seems that way offensively. He may be victimized defensively though more than Dotson

Although it was ugly, this loss will only benefit this young/inexperienced team. Uconn is a quality team that's gonna go deep into the NCAA tournament and it's sometimes good to be "humbled." Alot of weakness' were pinpointed tonight for LSU to work on!!! Hopefully they'll play better Friday!

Agreed. This will be good in the longrun.

You've got to be kidding! Dotson will be a stud, just give him time (i.e. the month of Dec).

Our young team, even as veterans could not hang with the big dogs like UConn. Not even in the same class.

The refs were a little foul happy tonight, but Storm looks like he's gonna be a consistent player this year. Hopefully Bo and Taz can calm down and not try to do too much to carry the team. We just need for either Harris, Green, or Dotson to step up and provide some offense!

I liked Bobby Knight being complimentary about Green and Ludwig. Not used to hearing positives from him. Then he said that people who understand the game wouldn't have said something that he was quoting. Mr. Personality.

I only hated Bobby Knight for 20 years. I actually like him now and he's a great commentator...doesn't have to be gimmicky like Vitale.
We just weren't ready for a team like U Conn. They're 1-2 seed material and we're 10th seed stuff.

LSUMMA09 - Your observations are exactly the way I see things. Now I don't have to write anything. Nice work.
Couldn't agree more. I know he bit his tongue last night...wanted to talk about beating LSU in the final four. Knight provides the best analysis out there. Doesn't sugar coat it, but he doesn't have to.

I enjoyed listening to Knight very much last night. His insight to the game is something you aren't going to get from many other commentators (if any at the college level).

Good observations.
I really thought Ludwig grew into the game and was a player by the end. Hopefully it carries over and he continues to come out of his shell.
I like Storm a lot. I think it's a little unfortunate that the refs blew so many fouls. There were several blocking fouls called on LSU's big men that I thought were charges.
SApencer needs to play a team game. Reminds me of Tank in that at times he just wants to run fast at the hoop and throw up a shot.
Trent has a lot of coaching to do. There is potential and I hope he can get them going by SEC play.

why just give him time when someone is out playing him? Kinsley is better than Dotson on both sides of the court.
