The Saban effect

Has coach Saban instilled in our heads what the Bear did at Bama.Has the hunger we have for winning making us a little delusional.I say this for one reason. If Saban and the 2003 team loses the NCG to Oklahoma, our perception of Saban would be entirely different. He still would've gone to Miami after 2004.
LSU hires Miles, who goes on to win the NC in 2007.That alone would make Miles a better coach than Saban in the minds of any LSU fan.Saban is head and shoulders above Miles period. But if that's what would've happened, that's how both coaches would be viewed today.
I am hurting just as bad as any LSU fan, but,we need to let reality set in.Miles will not be going anywhere soon.He will be LSUs coach next season.
The only hope I have for LSU is this. The loss Saban suffered to UAB seemed to change his direction in coaching at the SEC level.Maybe this is the kick in the arse that Miles needed. If not God help us LSU fans.
Winning championships is what all college sports fans want every season.Let's not forget how hard it is to win one, much less an SEC championship.

So 8-5 last year wasn't a big enough "kick" to Miles?

Saban had an 8-5 season, but, our perspective was way different then.

it isn't the record, but the complete incompetance at the end of the game that pisses us off

Any pressure Miles felt last year after going 8-5 is NOWHERE NEAR the pressure he is feeling this week after the National Embarrassment in Oxford. Not even close.

Agree.
Until Saturday, I was willing to chalk up last year as an aberration.

Saban has nothing to do with Coach Mile's inabilities. To suggest it IMO would be to show that one has been influenced by other fan bases.

Maybe this is the kick in the arse that Miles needed.
And he threw his players under the bus. How hard are you going to play for a guy like that?

I am hoping you are right about this. But the problem now is he does not have room for margin of error in the upcoming future anymore. If he is going to stay, he better come up with amazing winning streaks or few losses- which I doubt will happen.

I understand your point. To be honest, I dont really enjoy myself anymore when I watch the Tigers.

Buckle up then, next year will not be pretty.

quote:Saban lost three games every year he was here except 2003, but the revisionists on this board seem to think he went undefeated every year and won 5 National Championships. Is Saban a great coach? of course. But as of today he still doesn't have a perfect undefeated season. And of all his years with MSU, LSU, and AL, he only has ONE season with less than 2 losses, and that year he lost at home to a very average Florida team. So yes he is a great disciplinarian, a great coach, and builds strong programs wherever he goes. But he loses games too.

That's my point Lou,Saban's preception of being the "Great one" plays a big part in the way we all are reacting right now.

At LSU:
Saban couldn't beat a Ron Zook coached team at home and was lucky to win a game at Kentucky.
Saban apparantly couldn't coach DB's to keep plays in front of them in the last 2 minutes of big games, and he coached DB's in the NFL! (see Arkansas where he blew the SEC West Championship and Iowa)
Saban lost THREE or MORE games in '00, '01, '02, '04, including
Saban was a great recruiter and won a national championship at LSU, but at Alabama he's lost 6 and 2 games respectively his first two years and so far can't beat Urban Meyer.
Saban has a reputation as being an A-hole to staff (heard firsthand from mother of a student manager what an A$$hole he could be)
And..
Saban was a miserable failure as an NFL head coach after being handed total control of everything.
Saban actually thought Duante Culpepper was a better QB than Drew Brees.

Is there a reason beyond coaching why next year should be bad for LSU?
Do y'all lose a lot of seniors or something?
