The real issues w/LSU football... it's not about Saban

I've been reading posts on Tigerdroppings for the past several weeks. Have intentionally not posted accept for 1 or 2 things. Have thought about LSU football (probably too much) and why I feel as I do. I've had to accept that Les Miles personality is different. He's not intense or doesn't seem to be on the sidelines and he doesn't always make sense when speaking to the media. That bothers me but, there is more than one way to skin a cat so, if he wins, it really doesn't matter if doesn't show intensity. So why am I not as excited as I was in the past? The Miles supporters are right; He wins. So, if he wins why the concern?
In the past it was but now, at least for me, IT'S NOT ABOUT NICK SABAN. He's gone.
For me, the things that irritate me are..
1) Continual penalties that to me go back to lack of discipline instilled in the players by the coaching staff. (ie... false starts, illegal formations that have a tendency to negative big plays)
2) The fact that we simply look unprepared many times (ie..having to burn time outs early in games or early in the 2nd half of many games to get the right play call in)
3) We seem to play up or down to the competition. In his defense, any coach would have some difficulty getting the team motivated to play a La. Tech after a big game like Bama but, what about at Miss. State? We should have lost that game. Why did we seem so unmotivated? Why can't we come out against a lesser opponent, start fast, score a lot and put the subs in as opposed to waiting until the 4th quarter to wake up?
These are the things that irritate me about Miles. Now, he's probably going to be at LSU a long time and hopefully will take care of business.
In my opinion, the next two games are Big for LSU. Can he motivate his team when the conference championship is not on the line?
Again, for me, it's not about Nick Saban. It's about what I see on the field. We win. Yes, we win. But anyone can see that we do not always look very pretty getting it done and it causes you to think that eventually, lack of preparation and lack of discipline is going to cost you a key game. That's my concern with Miles

false starts,
If you were a player, would you need coaching to not do this?

Not following you. Are you saying it's the player's fault and not the coach?

If the coaches run your arse off for doing stupid shite like this, it makes you think about it a little more and not do it. So yes, the coaches can affect this.

I'm not sure what the cause of it is. But, I would think if I have a player or players who are consistently committing penalties that are hurting my team there has to be some punishment to discourage it/teach a lesson

As none of us observe practices, we don't know if this is being done or not.
We would expect not, however, as the penalties keep coming and the O-line isn't getting any thinner. . .

Hondeaux, good point.

Probably works with personal fouls. False starts? Nah.

Don't get hung up on False starts. I know I said that in my post. Let's just say any penalty that happens repeatedly especially on offense and there have been many. I don't have a list but you have seen the same games I hve.

isn't this system of audibles from the sideline new to LSU?
so we have a new system the coaches are trying to put in place... it takes the play clock to the last seconds... it asks our lineman to hold their stance for an extended period...
isn't this bound to have some growing pains that will manifest itself in false starts, delay of game and procedure calls - there has to be a learning curve to this...
I'm frustrated about these calls too... but I think we can... and the coaches... expect some of these things to occur

After Alem's 3rd offsides penalty for lining up across the line, he would have been running with the cross country team all of the following week . . .

I agree. I blame the players. Crowton and Miles won a National Championship and didn't have these issues. They really didn't have these issues last year. The JLee INTs were the only real bad spot on offense last year. So to say that Crowton and Miles have no discipline on offense is mistaken.

Good point and I've thought the reason for the audibles may be that they don't trust Jefferson yet to be able to change a play so, the coaches or changing it for him. Make sense?

DoubleDeuce you may be right and I don't have a list but, I think the penalties on the offensive side of the ball have been an issue for several years. Again, my memory may be off but don't think so.
If the players are the issue, ok, why not recruit more disciplined players?

He didnt say there wasnt ANY discipline. Just not enough of it to remedy the stupid penalties

He is correct. False start penalties have long been considered to be a sign of a poorly disciplined team (i.e. poor coaching). He did not make this up. it is a well known fact in high school, college, and the NFL. It is about discipline.
