Someone else on this board posted some defensive starters that Alabama will lose this year. In addition to McClain probably leaving as a Jr. I think it is 7 starters on what is deemed a great defense. Didn't Shula recruit those guys if they're Seniors? How come we don't hear anything about that?

Looking at regular season,Saban went 8-4, 11-1, 9-2 with the LSU teams he coached with "his" players, not counting the 2000 & 2001 seasons. Miles goes 10-1,10-2,10-2, 7-5, probably 10-2 or 9-3 this year, with "his" and Saban's players.

I think we have just as good of a coach and recruiter. If Saban was the genius that everyone makes him out to be then we should have repeated in the 2004 season because that was a team with all of "his" players. Now he's had 2 great seasons at Alabama with Shula's players and everyone thinks that we have the lesser coach. I don't get it.

You MUST give Saban a free pass on his 2004 record - the poor guy was distracted in setting up for his own personal "super bowl" negotiations (compensation package) with Miami Dolphins before leaving LSU. There was great preparation by Saban in this effort, and he did a wonderful job in corraling support from the LSU administration in "freezing" their coaching search while he worked to ensure himself a "done deal" with Miami. The LSU players and assistant coaches, of course, were obviously affected by this distraction, but it was for a "higher cause". A couple of late season losses by LSU was a fair sacrifice, don't you think?

You're missing the most important part here. When Saban took over the program, we were a mess. He completely changed the culture of our program and transformed us into a national power. Miles took over 2 years removed from a National Championship and loads of talent on the team. It's not fair to compare their records only

I just don't think the program being down has anything to do with it. We still had tons of talent with what DiNardo left behind. We weren't that far removed from 3 straight bowl seasons and Shula was fired during a bowl season for Alabama.

Actually Dinardo took over the mess turned things around then hired a terrible def. co. and would not get rid of him. Saban had some talent to work with and he did build on it. Both Saban and Miles are good coaches and recruiters
