With 4 minutes left MSU is not setting up a block, they are setting up a return and hoping for a short field with plenty of time for a TD.

With less than a minute left, MSU is putting on the block, which means a rushed kick, which could lead to a really short field. Plus, we were deeper in our own territory at that point.

Right. And they got their short field and drove down to the 1 inch line. If we take a safety, they get the ball at the 30 and have a long field to score a TD.

It all worked out and it wasn't a "bad call" to not take the safety, but I think it may have been a good idea to force MSU to a 70 yard TD. And again, what was the real downside to taking a safety at 4:00?
