New facemask rule

Isn't eliminating the 5 yard incidental facemask a stupid move? It seems like now if you grab it, you might as well make it worth it and drag the SOB down.
You used to see players pull their hands away. I think that's going to stop. More neck injuries to come.

no, b/c if you incidentally grab it, there is no penalty at all...only severe facemasks will result in a penalty...good rule IMO although it is very judgemental

That rule needs to be changed. In our game and the Tennessee game, there were 15 yard penalties for barely touching the mask.

Not true. Any touching of the mask gets you 15.

Here is the explanation from the NCAA's advisory document highlighting the rule revisions:
Face-Mask Foul (Rule 9-1-2-q). There is no longer a foul if any player grabs an opponent’s face mask without pulling, twisting, or turning it. The five-yard penalty has been eliminated. This change does not change the safety aspect of this rule. Pulling, twisting, or turning an opponent’s face mask remains a personal foul with a 15-yard penalty.

Complete judgment call. You can have a incidental and not a flag. The one on tt was a little iffy. I probably would not have called it but it did benefit the tigers so ok.
