since he likes to run the nickel scheme with a linebacker, how does that affect our recruiting strategy. like recruiting more linebackers than normal and having less cornerbacks.

We'll no longer pass on good pass rushing DEs bc they are "undersized". Meaning, they won't be considered too small just bc they aren't 250 lbs as high school Juniors.

So a Frank Alexander or Jermaine Cunningham will be offered in the future.

Much needed welcome change.

Only Chavis knows. Maybe we start getting higher rated LBs

I think he'll be awesome...much better than mallveto.

I'm so tired of talking about LSU football and what's gonna happen this year. I'm just soooooo ready for the season to start. I don't think I've ever been so anxious for a season to start.

I personally think he will start signing more of those potential "hybrid" S/LB types who can rush the passer and cover at the same time since he already changed Coleman and he does like to do that. If we can live up to our current talent level, then our defense should be one of the best in the nation in the next few years, and hopefully attract better, smaller, more athletic LB's. If we can put a few into the NFL in the next couple of years, we should see more and more talent at the LB position.

You have it backwards. We will recruits more safeties and move them to LB.

You can see the change already this year. They are recruiting a lot of DBs, S, ATHs, and small LBs.

I honestly loved the guy. He was a great coach. He had some beliefs that I don't agree with. But he is a Tennessee guy who played here and coached here for years. He will always be a Vol to me. So I will pull for him.

He has lacked talent up front of late so he had to play soft coverage alot and send pressure. But if you can get pressure from your front four Chavis is as good a Defensive Cord. as there is. And I would say he is probably the best LB's coach out there. It will not be long before you start seeing alot of first round draft choices from your LB corp.

He loves speed and will recruit undersized kids who Moffit will make into what Coach Chavis is looking for. He doesn't like playing freshmen but if they are superstars he will play them. I have heard alot from LSU people saying the defense was the thing holding this team back. If that is true. Look for a big year. He will get everything out of the kids he has. They will love him and they will play for him.

IMO. It was a great hire for LSU. Best of luck to Chief. Wish things would have worked out differently but it may end up best for him as well as us.

Where have you read that? I think he still uses a DB for the 5th/nickel or 6th/dime back, but likes one of the regular OLB's to be that hybrid LB/Safety Tepperbacker that can drop into coverage so he wont have to substitute as much in obvious passing situations.....

High School Safeties and running backs will be turned into LB"S...High School LB's will be turned into DE"S..

Probably the best LB we ever had at UT when Chavis was there was Al Wilson..and he was recruited as a SAFETY...Saw in him in high school at Jackson Central-Merry..and he played Quarterback, running back and safety..and weighed about 210..Chavis turned him into a MLB his senior year..( The year before he had Leonard Little in the middle..He was TOO DUMB..Little was a DE..a pass rusher pure and simple)..The year UT won it all Al was in the Middle with Eric Westmoreland on one side and Louisiana's own Raynoch Thompson was the other OLB.."Raynoch" was a bad mutha...
