I'd say the same thing about Carl Crawford.

Mauer is the best hitter in the league besides Pujols and he does it playing superb defense at a crucial position. The next best offensive catcher isn't even in the same solar system as Mauer. If he doesn't win its a crock.

The mofo is hitting .383, he's the best hitter in the MLB.

And he has 25 fricking home runs.

Does a player have to fricking hit .400 or win the triple crown to win the MVP if he doesn't play on a playoff team?

Joe Mauer

06: .347, 13, 84
07: .293, 7, 60
08: .328, 9, 85
09: .380, 23, 74

Brian McCann:

06: .333, 24, 93
07: .270, 18, 92
08: .301, 23, 87
09: .284, 13, 58

Mauer better average.

McCann better is just about everything else.

Look at those 09 numbers and tell me McCann is better at anything offensively.

Well, Mauer is having the better year, I won't disagree. But you could just as easily say look at the '06 numbers and yatta yatta.

Mauer's having a great year. I'm not trying to down him. He's incredible. Just saying, to argue that no catcher is anywhere close to him offensively is a bit of a misnomer.

No catcher is close to him at all this year, this year is when it counts.

Let me help you. This is a better indication. Not saying McCann doesn't look good with these numbers as well.

Joe Mauer
2006- .347/.429/.507 .936 OPS
2007- .293/.382/.426 .808 OPS
2008- .328/.413/.451 .864 OPS
2009- .383/.413/.653 1.101 OPS

Brian McCann
2006- .333/.388/.572 .961 OPS
2007- .270/.320/.452 .772 OPS
2008- .301/.373/.523 .896 OPS
2009- .283/.357/.488 .846 OPS

Your stats suck.

Mauer 09: .380/.446/.637
McCann 09: .284/.358/.491

The difference between the 2 in OPS is the same as the difference between McCann and Dioner Navarro, the worst regular catcher in baseball.

eta: The whole point of the discussion is talking about this year.

Mauer is also great defensively. I don't think someone should win awards if they miss a significant amount of time in most cases (see Sabathia as NL Cy Young last year), but Mauers season to date is an exception. His numbers are unreal.

Mauer is good and right now he should win it, but you cant say that Teixeira can't be thrown in there too. The only knock on him right now is his average

I was maybe being hyperbolic, but I think in St. Louis's lineup Mauer would have around 100 RBI. Pujols obviously hits for power a lot better than Mauer. I mean I'm not saying it's not debatable but .383 takes me from 6 to midnight.

To be .100 points above the next best guy in average is pretty impressive

For what? The OP implied there's no catcher in all of baseball that can produce offensively like he does.

Well, that's just not true. Perhaps for this one year he is producing better than any catcher, but that's only relative to one position. Hell, a case could be made that he's not even the best bat on his team...

Morneau is a good hitter but you cannot make that argument.
