How critical is this season for Miles?

You would think winning the Title in '07 buys him several years...but then you have people suggesting he did it with the bulk of Saban's players...

So then he follows up the only 2-loss championship year in forever (many believe we were stone lucky to play for the crystal ball) with a shitty season last year after he takes the liberty to hire his two buddies as co-DCs...

He does an amazing job still signing a great class despite the shitty season...

But with a vintage recruiting year in Louisiana next year, how critical is it Les shows he can rebound strong and match strides with Saban, Urban, etc. in the SEC now with his own system and players?

How many wins does he HAVE TO HAVE this year? ..how many does he have to have to keep the recruiting strong and not get the image of Larry Coker?

This might be Les's biggest year yet IMO

I'll say that if he doesn't win a game, he will get canned.

FWIW, every team that plays for the NC is extremely lucky. Obviously, you have to be good, but you need a whole lot of luck along the way also.

I'll say if he doesn't win 7 games he'll get canned, particulary if he gets embarrassed in some key games again

Waaaaay too much talent on the roster to give him a free pass two consecutive years for having average seasons and getting embarrassed by less-talented rivals IMO

he needs to show that he is in control. that his decisions to shake things up paid off. the alums at lsu can be nasty. if things go south this year miles would feel heat from the alums. when heat comes from the alums alleva will follow suit. in other words a bad 09 and 10 would probably produce some walking papers. i dont think this will happen, but anybody thats followed lsu football for any number of years will tell you something similar.

when's the last time a 2-loss team won the NC?

...and one that lost to a team as shitty as UK

it was a miracle we got to playt for it...not that I'm complaining

I personally feel there is a large contingent of them who still are not convinced in Les's game-day abilities

well this is probably true. but alums are usually ignorant when it comes to the enternal components of a team. last years team got dealt a bad blow when our qb couldn't screw his head on right. plus the co coordinator shite was a diseaster due to human pride. miles can coach plus he is a helluva a recruiter. miles has to strong coordinators in place now with strong track records. this will help him alot if pride can stay out of the way.

If they do feel like that, then they're idiots. You don't beat 5 coaches that have won NC's in one season by being a lackluster gameday coach.

Luck manifests itself in different ways- look at last year's NC game. Texas was "lucky" it wasn't their azz Florida was spankin.

actually, some fans remember the near-losses or too-close-for-comfort wins as well...

Les has had a lot of them in games we were clear-cut favorites

gotta agree with you again but lsu has been the hunted for the last 7 years. they get the best out of teams. but his win percentage is still around .800 during his tenure. not many can match this success. myers, carroll, saban, stoops, tressell, and brown are about the only ones who can match miles success at there schools. i;m not including the old birds like paterno and bowden because there legends.

some fans are idiots...you can make this claim for any school, it's a big part of the beauty of college football. of course Les probably has more than his share of haters, and you seem to be in the club

Since u r asking me what I think... LSU fans will look back 15 yrs from now and say Miles was the best hire in LSU history. He will be LSUs Bo, or Bowden, or Joe Pa. How critical do I think this season is? Not very bc Miles thinks in terms of positive results, team and family, not deadlines and consequences.

He will be here in 2010. No way a team with the talent we have goes .500 or worse and that's what he'd have to do to lose his job.

But I do think it's a critical year for him and the program coming off what happened last year.

At this point, with the bowl win at the end of last year and the much needed changes to his hand picked staff, I do still think he has the majority of the fan base still on his side.

However, if he has a season similar to last year, even 8-4 with a bowl loss...then the environment around the program starts to get negative and that snowballs. We've all seen it too many times before.

So while it won't be critical to his immediate future, I think this year is critical to Miles being here for a long time and establishing a consistent winner.

I think we'll go 9-3 and that likely keeps him on the plus side of public opinion and gives us a better chance of keeping going what we thought we thought we knew we had going just a year ago.

After that debacle last year (in which he is 100% responsible for), if he does not win a BCS Bowl this year, he will definitely start feeling some heat.
