Looking for 1908 LSU football family members, I have

been in contact with Brownell, Seip and Gandy family members and thanks to them I was able to pick up some good stories on the 1908 team.
And looking of 1908 related items.
The Brownell family has some nice pictures and the 1908 helmet, pads, pants, etc.
Still 2 years away form finishing, but here is how good Doc Fenton was...
The LSU team travel to Ruston to play La. Tech, Doc had two interceptions and returned both for touchdowns, one of these may have been an eighty yard return.
The game was very short and called early, still Coach Wingard pulled Doc well before the end of the game.
It is sometime while in Ruston Clarence contracted typhoid fever, after his passing away the LSU student body raised money to help the Smith family.
John Seip played much of the season hurt. Ram Harvey is injuried in parctice early in the season and never would see the field again.
Lesher only plays in one game, but would go on to be a starter on the first LSU basketball team. Lesher is one of the Pennsylvania 5 and a close friend of W. Phillips.
So any help would be very useful.

This is what I do on the side when I have free time form work:
I have thought about doing a book covering LSU football form around 1900-1930, it is much harder to come up with new information on the 1890's teams.
But the 1908 book is a pressing need to fill in the gap of what really happened and the myths.
In the book I will have to cover the 1905-1910/12 seasons.
So the 1907 season will be covered in some depth due to the player Buser.

Doc Fenton's son, Dr. T.T. Fenton was our family physician for years until his retirement. Don't even know if he's still alive.

Dr. T.T.(Terry) Fenton was my step-dad. He died several years ago. He was a great Tiger fan and a wonderful storyteller. We all miss him very much and often raise a glass of Irish whiskey in his memory.

you should still include what you have, how ever brief it might be.

My grandfather, Pierre Forrest Chatelain, supposedly played for the Tigers somewhere between 1905-1908. Family evidence doesn't exist, only the memory of my mother who died a few years ago. At the Andonie museum they have a few pics of these teams up on the back wall, but no legends, and I was told no rosters of these teams.
You have any of this information? Thanks!

Your step-dad was a wonderful man and a fine physician. My family went to him for years, and we were very sorry when he retired and sold his office.

He does not show up on any of the rosters I have, but that means little....
In 1908 55 people went out for the team and they had the varsity team, the main scrub team and 2 other scrub teams, plus subs.
I will see if he shows up on a scrub team somewhere.

This is fasinating. I have been following your progress the past few years since I joined TD and I am astounded at the links that bind everyone together through one team. Please let us know when you plan to publish this book. Whether it is next year or five years from now, I am very interested in your research.

I saw Doc Fenton introduced on the field at Tiger Stadium in 1966, when I was a student. He was very old, walking slowly with a cane from the South Goal Line toward Midfield as Sid Crocker, the Stadium announcer, recited the exploits and LSU records of Doc Fenton to the crowd. The crowd appreciation and applause crecscendoed up to near bedlam as Doc neared midfield. Hunched over, one hand on the cane, the other hand waving to the now screaming and applauding crowd was a great moment in Tiger Stadium history for me, and thousands of others. That night, Doug Moreau broke one of Doc Fenton's records, with a 46 yard field goal. (Doc's previous record was a drop-kick!)

I have nothing to offer to this thread but would like to say I enjoyed reading all the fine post very much. I love the stories and history.
Please keep us updated as to how your book is coming along. I am fascinated by what you do and am very interested in reading more.
Thanks to all!

Geauxgrrl--- would you post some info about Doc Fenton for the rest of us? Where did he live after LSU? What did he do for a living? Was he a physician, like his son? When did he pass away?

Any thing else you can tell us about Doc's life would be appreciated. I am fascinated by the 1908 football teams exploits, and can't read enough about Doc and his team mates.

tigger1,
One of my great uncles may have been on that team. My grandfather and his four brothers all played back then. Perhaps you could post the 1908 Roster?

The 1908 roster:
J.G. Albright
G.E. Fenton
J.L. Frier
M.H. Gandy
R.O. Gill
C. Harvey
W.A. Hillman
C.B. Johnson
M.F. Lally
L.R. Lescher
C.Y. Martin
A.M. McCollam
O.H. Noblett
T.W. O’Bannon
W.J. Phillips
W.M. Pollock
W.F. Ryan
J.J. Seip
N.W. Sentell
C.L. Smith brother of V.E, Smith
J.K. Smith
V.E. Smith
R.F. Stovall brother of R.L. Stovall
R.L. Stovall
A.J. Thomas
The hardest one of all those to track down is C. "Ram" Harvey.
I have the home address for each in 1908, height, weight, school or schools in some case they were at before coming to LSU.
The Birth and Date of death for near all of them, what most did after attending LSU.
I put Phillips on the list only because he is one of the Pennsylvania five and is one of the players Tulane charges in their case.

No, none on my uncles are on that team. But, J.J. Seip is the grandfather on one of my consultants. Have you spoke with anyone from his family?
