Can someone help explain the Wimbeldon bracket for me?

All top 4 women's seeds made it to the semis yesterday. Every tourny I've ever seen in my life would've had 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. This would've meant teh Williams' sisters would've played in the semis not the finals. Wimbeldon had 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 in the semis. How and why did the pairings work out like that?

the bracket is soooo much bigger
i know in the mens, they play seven matches, instead of six
more players mean different lineups

I'll never understand it, but in this year's women's bracket (if all top seeds would have advanced), the quarterfinals would have been 1 vs 5, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 7, and 2 vs 8
Seriously, how the hell does that make any sense?
ETA: Looked up the 2008 bracket. If all tops seeds advanced, pairings in the quarters would have been 1 vs 8, 4 vs 6, 3 vs 5, and 2 vs 7.
That doesn't seem to make much sense either.

Exactly. It shouldn't matter how big the field is, because if all high seeds win out you should still end up with 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 in the semis.
