I seriously wonder how these 'ratings' come about? We all saw the release of the Florida Chancellor's rankings - is that the basis? How is research being measured ( and should it really matter when it comes to getting an education - the physics department at LSU was all about research when I was there and they were supposedly on probation & definitely sucked as instructors on the whole... )? These are real questions I am asking - not just a bitterapple response - as, logically speaking, I don't get it. Its not something that is easily measured. And don't get me wrong; I saw plenty lacking in classrooms at LSU in my field. I just haven't seen a way to measure one school to another outside of pure perception.

Why do people have such a hard time accepting that LSU is not all that on the academic front? There is no "perception" that La has the second worst public schools in the country. They can measure the average ACT/SAT scores for incoming freshman. They can measure admission requirements. They can measure how students due in various testing to get into grad school or attain certifications. Maybe job placement and starting salaries.

In the end, LSU is probably a middle of the pack SEC program.
Sometimes I tell some of my die hard LSU buddies that Texas A&M is a better school than LSU and they are shocked. They just can't understand it with all of those Aggie jokes and such.
And then when you throw in how much better Texas is then A&M, you really get the funny looks.
