fwiw, i thought the ending was pretty open-ended so that almost any scenario would be plausible, but this is what i had heard also

I completely agree and it's also what I heard. If he wants back in they could make them both live or if they both want out they both will die. But the rumor is tr knight is leaving and katharine heigel most likely will stay.
