Saints vs. Falcons

Atlanta Falcons:
They went 11-5 last year and lost 24-30 to the Cardinals in the playoffs. Saints split the series with the Falcons last year with the home team winning their game. (As a matter of fact, they split games with all the NFC South foes.)
Matt Ryan looked really good last year for a rookie throwing for 3,440 yards 16 touchdowns and 11 ints. He passed for over 300 yards against us in one of our games with him.
M. Turner ran for 1,699 yards and 17 TDs and J. Norwood added 489 yards and 4 TDs.
They drafted P. Jerry and William Moore, two players Saints fans had their eye on before the draft.
They also signed TE Tony Gonzalas and LB Mike Peterson.
Questions:
Will Matt Ryan go through a sophmore slump or is he the real deal at qb and emerge as the next big time NFL qb?
Are the Saints additions in the secondary enough to stop him? Are our Linbackers good enough to pass cover?
What impact will Tony Gonzales have on the offense? Is he too old and can the Saints cover him effectively?
Will P. Jerry and Mike Peterson disrupt the Saints offense this season?
Can the Saints find a way to stop M. Turner?

Signs point to no, but one can hope....(about the slump)

A pass rush will probably do better than the Secondary additions when it comes to stopping him. And no, I don't feel the LBs are good enough to pass cover effectively.

Tony will definitely make a positive impact. I mean, he can only help. I think a one Mr. Malcom Jenkins will probably help out here...if not, Darren Sharper will be effective against the TEs in the South.

I wouldn't say disrupt, but they need to be accounted for.

Tough question. Although not horrible against the run for most of last year, Turner burned the Saints alot in the Atlanta win...so did Norwood. I don't think its about stopping him, but about keeping him from getting the 20 yard gashers and keeping the Atlanta Off. out of the end zone.(I know, Captain Obvious)

Will Matt Ryan go through a sophmore slump or is he the real deal at qb and emerge as the next big time NFL qb? He probably will pick up where he left off...he's gonna be a great QB for the Falcons for the next decade.
Are the Saints additions in the secondary enough to stop him? Are our Linbackers good enough to pass cover? One can only hope Porter's return and the addition of Greer is the answer to our secondary issues. Vilma is capable of a pro bowl year and we can only pray Morgan returns to form. If the D line gets the rush, this will make the LB's and CB's jobs that much easier.
What impact will Tony Gonzales have on the offense? Is he too old and can the Saints cover him effectively? Dudes a baller and he will be a favorite target for the sophmore Ryan.
Will P. Jerry and Mike Peterson disrupt the Saints offense this season? Through the air? No way possible! On the ground? Its probable...we will see how much we've improved.
Can the Saints find a way to stop M. Turner? I think Clancey and Ellis will have great years this season....so yes, these 2 are capable of being dominant together. I am worried about our depth on the D-line...so we will see how it plays out.

yeah. what the two said above. i agree. we just gotta worry about playing hard every down. every man does his job and is accountable and we will be ok. i'm not worried about any other teams in the league. i'm ready to play and find out. c'mon football. let's go!

quote:I'm thinking they have a similar season to what the Saints had in '07. The book is out on Ryan.
Will Matt Ryan go through a sophmore slump or is he the real deal at qb and emerge as the next big time NFL qb?
quote:No. Other than the defensive scheme nothing has changed as far as the LBs are concerned unless Morgan is able to step in for Shanle. Even so Morgan was never known for his coverage skills. As far as the DBs, maybe we upgraded at safety (anything is an upgrade over Bullocks) but I'm not sure they got better overall. Greg Williams was the only real upgrade and if he can't bring a pass rush the it doesn't matter what the DBs or LBs do.
Are the Saints additions in the secondary enough to stop him? Are our Linbackers good enough to pass cover?
quote:I think Tony is still capable of playing at a high level. Playing with a new QB is nothing new to him either. I think he's the wild card for the Falcons.
What impact will Tony Gonzales have on the offense? Is he too old and can the Saints cover him effectively?
quote:I don't think they'll improve the Falcons defense. I don't think they're downgrades either. I wouldn't expect the rookie DT to have much more of an impact than Ellis did for the Saints last year. As far as Peterson, he couldn't be much better than the departed Brooking.
Will P. Jerry and Mike Peterson disrupt the Saints offense this season?
quote:Then Saints actually fared better against the Burner than most teams. While he averaged 110 ypg against 14 other teams he only averaged 78.5 yards against the Saints. The Saints only allowed him 2 rushing TD in two contests and 1 reception resulting in 0 yds.
Can the Saints find a way to stop M. Turner?

i think unless matt ryan is injured, whether it'll be a major(acl) or minor (such as a broken finger), then he will elevate his game higher than last season. i don't think sophomore slumps usually apply as much to pro football as it does to college. Usually, NFL quarterback get better the more they play. Here's me praying he doesn't

I'm hoping this is true, a la Carson Palmer. Otherwise we are looking at having to play a Farve type player twice a year.

Rookie DT usually don't have that much of an impact, but he's an upgrade IMO, although it's not like we have a power running game anyway.
Peterson > Brooking IMO/IMHO.
Just needed a new offseason topic. Thanks Saints fans.

Questions:
Will Matt Ryan go through a sophmore slump or is he the real deal at qb and emerge as the next big time NFL qb? He'll be a stud.
Are the Saints additions in the secondary enough to stop him? Are our Linbackers good enough to pass cover? Yes and no.
What impact will Tony Gonzales have on the offense? Is he too old and can the Saints cover him effectively? Not as much as the talking heads would have you believe. There's still only one football to go around.
Will P. Jerry and Mike Peterson disrupt the Saints offense this season? No.

I'm hoping he struggles, but I don't think he will. We've improved our defense so we should be better at stopping him. He's a decent runner too, so maybe the Saints will want to have a LB spy him a few times each game

The changes in the secondary, along with added depth on the D-Line and LB and the hiring of Greg Williams will be a tremendous help. I think we catch a break playing them late in the season when we won't be missing Smith to suspension. I think our LBs are decent in coverage
quote:

I think he has one or two more 1000 yard seasons left in him. Williams will find some way to cover him, whether it be Vilma, Jenkins, Sharper or someone else

Maybe once or twice each game, but nothing like John Abraham
quote:

I think so, the added depth on the D-line and Linebacking corps will help. He rushed for 96 and 61 yards against us last year, now that we've improved the defense, it hopefully shouldn't be a problem

I meant that Atlanta split their games with each NFC South team.
