Phil Hughes getting his chance

First inning was throwing 93-94. This is back to were he was before his injuries and up from the 89-91 that he was throwing last season. Even if he gives up a bunch of runs I am still pumped that his velocity is back.

Almost struck out the side in the first inning.
2 IP, no walks, 1 hit, no runs, 3 k's... I'll take it.

Hughes goes 6 gives up no runs. 6 strikeouts, 2 BB, and 2 hits against.
Looked like the number 1 pitching prospect tonight.

Let's see how he looks next time out. That kid can be great. If he gets some consistency, watch out.

Up until his injuries (non of which were on his throwing arm, thankfully) he was pretty consistent.

consistently bad.
Before his injuries he was the best pitching prospect in baseball and in the middle of throwing a no hitter. gtfo

1 game, big deal. i'm not saying he wont be a stud later on, but he got knocked around all season.

Before he got hurt in 2007 he had an ERA around 4. As a 20 year old.

Phil looked great tonight for his first start. I was impressed how he was able to work his way out of jams, esspecially when he had the bases loaded.
And as for the bashing on Hughes, GTFO.

I was really impressed with his cutter. Gametrack actually picked it up as a slider because it had so much movement.
And some of the curves he threw were amazing. The one to strick out Polanco

That cutter is something that he didn't have when he came up in 07. I caught the first couple of innings on the radio, and they kept talking about how rare it was for a pitcher to pick up a pitch like that and have it be so effective in such a short amount of time.
Time will tell if he can sustain this kind of success, but as far as the first outing is concerned, all signs were positive.
Also.. if he continues to pitch like this does Wang get relegated to the pen?

There have been talks of Joba to the pen.
Good for the short term, but long term

Joba needs to be in the pen. They need more quality arms in the pen.

if wang cant come back and prove to be effective, then Joba needs to stay in the rotation.
