Are there any Builders, Architects or Developers that read these boards? If so, I'm interested in their take on Spray Foam Insulation.

Has anyone had any experience with it in general or know anyone who has?

i have heard the foam insulation done on a new house will save a significant ( lowers your cooling and heating by 2/3) on energy cost if they did right. the cost from what i heard, it is 3x as much as fiberglass insulation.

That's exactly right. It's generally a 40-60% energy savings and can cost 3:1 what traditional fiberglass insulation costs. However when putting spray foam insulation into a new structure you can also generally save as much as 50% on your Heating and Air system since you don't need as much due to the envelope being sealed better. It is also cleaner and healthier! Cleaner because there is a lot less dust, etc and healthier because you and your family aren't breathing in fiberglass which is not good for you!

i have the option to buy, build or wait to see what happens on the housing market. I talked with several folks who have built and they say the savings will pay for the cost in 2 years generally speaking. I asked for an example. The guy says that in a two 2 story house, the electric bill was at least cut in half in the foam house. He also mentioned that the attic in the foam house temp in July was much cooler due to the foam.

I can actually get you a two year guarantee on your utility bill with an exclusive system we have. The pay back is usually 1-3 years dependinig on certain things. I have a friend and mentor who is building a 12,000 square foot house in the Country Club of Louisiana who sprayed $50,000 worth of foam, but who will be cash flow positive day one because of how much he's saving on his heating and air system and the fact that his utility bill will be $450 instead of almost $1,000/month.

I also went into an attic in Lakeview in New Orleans where we sprayed our foam and it was the middle of July when attics are generally as hot as 120-140 degrees depending on the orientation of the house and the attic in this house was 77 degrees. When you spray it can generally be as little as 7-10 degrees above the temperature in the house.

Would love to help you if you're interested.

I've done a little research on it, and in the south it seems that most of the impact is in the attic. Not sure you get much of a contribution to the payback if you spray the walls.

What do you spray? I've seen a couple of attics done with Iconyne (sp?)

do you use modeling software to determine this?

How do you make it quote like that in a reply so you can direct your post directly to someone?

We spray EnergyWise Foam (Bayer) and yes we have a proprietary system that helps us tell the customer how much foam to put in the attic, walls, sub floors, etc, how much A/C, where the ducts and vents should go, etc.

I need to look into your comments about the value being in the attic in the south and not really in the walls. Where did you read or see this, I'd love a source to go to.

I took a Residential Energy Design course last summer. The thought being that, in the South, the difference in temperature outside to inside isn't that big on average, therefore you won't have much heat transfer through the walls...basic insulation is plenty. The main sources of heat gain in the home are the attic and solar gain through the windows.

Another issue they discussed related to foam, is since the house is sealed much better than normal, the owner needs to install an air exchanger to make sure there is enough fresh air flowing through the home.

What's wrong with saying you're successful. I know from experience that a man who always looks to improve is a man that's successful.

I built a house in SWLA last year & used foam insulation. My attic is never more than 3 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. My electric bill is never high. I think foam is worth the money.

Don't believe jack shite that you learn in college.

Wait till you get in the real world and learn your trade from experience - through mentors.

College is only good to show that you can stick to something long term and finish it.
