I loved this show when I was a kid, but now I catch a rerun every now and then. I forgot how liberal Hawkeye and BJ were. With Col. Potter being a former Cavalry and career man, that shite would have never gone on in real life.

I still haven't seen the movie yet which is odd since I'm a big Altman fan.

Stop right there.
The first three seasons of MASH were as good as any sitcom ever. But Maclean Stevenson (Henry Blake) and Wayne Rogers (Trapper) left after the third season, replaced by Harry Morgan as Potter and Mike Farrell as BJ. The show's creator, the brilliant comedy writer Larry Gelbart, left soon afterward, allowing Alan Alda to take over creative control of the series.
So not only were the cast replacements inferior (Stevenson was absolutely perfect as Blake; Rogers was better than Farrell, but the real difference is the Trapper character was much more interesting than dull BJ) but Alda was able to smother the show in 70s liberalism. Few great shows have gone so far downhill (MASH's only real rival in this department is All In The Family).
So whenever you're talking about MASH, you're really talking about two different shows -- First three seasons (Great) and everything afterward (Blecch).

I love the movie but dislike most Altman.
If you're a real Altman fanatic you should check out the TV series Combat. Altman directed several episodes, my favorite being "Survival", most of which has no dialogue. It's available online -- you can find it through OVguide.

I didn't like the movie.
The liberal stuff never bothered me.
I pretty much loved it all til the end. Yes there were hits and misses. No different than any other show. 105 million people watched the finale.
I agree Wayne was better than Farrell by far. Got so sick of hearing about his frakkin wife.
Winchester had his moments but it was more fun to see Frank tormented.
It is funny how Lorreta Swit was a sex symbol yet she really wasn't attractive. Ew, just looked her up and she has had some very unfortunate plastic surgery.

Her azz sure looked good in a pair of Army fatigues, though.

Excellent summation.
I have the first three seasons on DVD. Won't buy anything after that.

I think it also went down once Radar, Klinger and Frank left(well Klinger didn't leave but switched roles). Some of the funniest scenes in the show involved those characters and they played their respective roles to a "T".
Frank to Klinger: "Get out of that dress right now soldier".
Klinger: "I'm not that easy"
Somthing like that...

I'll actually give it the benefit of the doubt thru Season 5. Once Larry Linville left the show, that was it.

Frank Burns (Larry Linville) deserves a mention. His character remained true and hilarious all the way to the end of his run. I loved MASH. The original cast chemistry was amazing.

As much of a jerk as Frank Burns was, everybody on the set loved Larry Linville. On the set he was a great guy, and was extremely popular with his castmates and crew.

I watch it every week night.

Personally, my favorites are with Winchester. I think the reason is because Winchester was the only one who could match Hawkeye's wit and wouldn't take his BS. Burns was a whipping boy for Pierce and co., so Winchester was refreshing.
I guess being a veteran, I liked Potter better. Blake was kind of a numbskull and wasn't very believable as a surgeon or a Lt. Colonel IMO.
