pbs.org/newshour -- Blockade is effective

quote:

"Most of the vessels have appeared to halt or have reduced movement after clearing the strait," she said, "which tells us that the effect of the blockade is starting to show up because most of these vessels that have crossed have some kind of history with carrying Iranian-origin sanctioned cargo."

The Rich Starry, a Chinese-owned tanker previously sanctioned by the U.S. for smuggling Iranian petroleum products, left the strait and then turned back this week, according to publicly available ship tracking data.
The US blockade has a rule book

The terms of the U.S. blockade have contributed to some uncertainty. According to a notice to mariners, the blockade is being enforced in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, not at the Strait of Hormuz. So simply passing the strait doesn't mean a vessel beat the blockade.

quote:

"Humanitarian shipments including food and medical supplies essential for the survival of the civilian populations" can pass with inspections.

But I was told TACO had no plan. Perhaps he'll release some meme's today, to create false controversy.

I thought PBS shut down with no Federal Funding? Maybe just a skeleton crew operating till Dems get back in power.

It's amazing that none of the cargo ships that have been passing thru the Strait haven't hit a mine yet. Considering Iran claims they didn't map the mines when laid and the fact tides and currents can move the mines, seems like the odds are eventually a couple of ships will contact mines.

We can play the long game as well, it seems...

quote:

A decade-and-a-half ago, while on a research visit to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida, I had a candid exchange with a senior military official (now retired) deeply focused on the Iranian “file.” Even back then, the regime’s energy weapon loomed large in American strategic thinking. CENTCOM’s nightmare scenario, he told me, was not a complete closure of the Strait but a deliberate “narrowing” of it. Through tactics like minelaying, naval drills and the harassment of transiting vessels, Tehran could constrict the flow of oil through the Strait enough to cause a spike in global oil prices without ever presenting Washington with a clear casus belli.

quote:

The planned countermove, however, was equally revealing. If Iran ever interfered with the Strait in a meaningful way, the official told me, the waterway would “remain closed – by us.” Such a response would accomplish two critical objectives: it would rob the Iranian regime of its most vital source of hard currency, and it would quickly turn every country relying on Gulf oil into a stakeholder in the containment of the Iranian regime.

excellent article of the long-term strategy (forbes.com)

I read somewhere it's actually way better than that if you like small government.

The people who liked PBS stepped up contributions by quite a lot to keep it.
