Why are screens the go-to rather than slants?

I never played football so maybe I'm missing something regarding scheme. Our OL is bad and doesn't give much time, but is there something stopping us from running a quick slant rather than screens? Seems like more often than not, the blocks are getting blown up and we get minimal yardage. Is it Nuss's hesitancy to throw to the middle of the field?

Nuss likes running backwards instead of stepping up at all so screens make sense

If there are lbs muddying up the middle…..you throw to the perimeter…..he is taking what the defense gives him…..which is…..not much…..you need a decent o line to beat Bama. We did not have that…..do you expect miracles?

Yeah this seems completely reasonable, but then I realize that Alex Atkins had one of the worst offenses in the country last year and is probably worse than Sloan.
