Why don’t coaches contracts have some performance element? Like wins and losses?

Make it a pay range to incentivize success. The recent contracts basically require that you stay out of trouble and be present at practice and games. It’s basically a government contract.

Because no agent is going to let their clients agree to that deal. The precedent was set a long time ago. And it would require the collusion of all four major conferences to change it.

They do have performance incentives. Kelly’s contract has performance incentives.

There’s an argument to be made about the balance between base pay and incentive pay, but there are incentives.

Brian Kelly’s contract included:
- Buyout increases from 90% to 100% if he wins a natty.
- Salary increases by $250k/year if he wins an SRC title.
- Salary increases by $500k/year if he wins a natty.
- Post-season bonuses ranging from $75k for SECCG appearance to $500k for a national championship win.
