Has anyone ever used the rubber sleeves to wrap outdoor pipe to keep from freezing? I've always used the foam type. It seems to work fine but looks like the rubber would last longer.
Someone said the rubber is mainly for HVAC piping and not outdoor exposed water pipe.
Thanks

We replaced our old foam for rubber when the snow came this year. It seems more foam fitting which will provide better insulation compared to foam. Downside was getting it around tight spaces while claiming 18' on a ladder to finish the HVAC line leading into our crawlspace. We used it on that and some outside faucet lines years ago and have not had issues.

I also think it looks much nicer than foam.

Butyl rubber is a pretty good insulator and depending on thickness could prevent pipe freezing in moderately cold weather ( upper 20s overnight). For anything colder (10's overnight and below freezing in the day) a closed-cell foam tube is better.

I use the rubber pipe insulation from Home Depot.
Their website says it has a slightly better R value (3.2 vs 3.1)
