"I'm about done now academically," Benton said in an interview with Gannett Wednesday at Lee's Drug Store near Bastrop High. "I've been taking independent study classes online, and I finally wrapped it up. I'm ready to just get my transcript. When I take my visit this weekend to LSU, I'm going to take it down there with me."
Benton spent last summer at LSU working out with hopes of joining the team in August, but he was not given the OK by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

"All the work has been completed this time," Bastrop coach Brad Bradshaw said. "But we still have got to get through the Clearinghouse. When we get through the Clearinghouse, I'll say he's eligible. He's done everything that he was told to do by the NCAA. He was not cleared last summer because he messed up and because of my not understanding all the rules and what it took. They told him what he needed to do. But that's behind him now."

"It'd be exciting to play at the same school with Rueben," Benton said. "It would be just how it was in high school. We'd have a great passing team and some good blocking on the outside. I like to block. I'm not the selfish type player. I like to see other people get the ball, too. Right now, I just want to play."
