Looking for some recommendations for a laser engraver to use for some small hobby projects. Budget, $500 or less and something that really user friendly.

$500 won’t get you much. Maybe check out Facebook marketplace. Will need to decide what material you are engraving/cutting to decide what type laser to get.

I have diode and CO2 lasers I make projects with. If you are looking for a CO2 laser, the 40 watt K40 style are pretty solid, swapping out the control board with something like a Cohesion3D board and it becomes quite capable machine for projects up to the size of a cutting board (ans will be in your stated budget, less software).
Diode lasers are getting better every year, but aren't quite there yet and stay expensive. Fiber lasers are great, but start around $1500 for a small one.

This heavily depends on what you want to engrave.
