My trusty 2500 threw its first emissions code this weekend. Reluctant Heater??? Or something about the heater. I pulled the code but can’t remember exactly. It gave me 100 miles and said service DEF system. Then disappeared haven’t seen it again. I dropped it at my Chevy dealership. What can I expect?

Im not exactly sure how the GMs are set up and without a specific fault code its a guess. The fault is for a failed DEF heater or def temp sensor. There are electric heaters on the supply and return lines and either electric or coolant heater in the tank. If its the supply lines it shouldn't be a big deal. If its an electric in tank heater or temp sensor, the whole DEF header usually gets replaced. Still not a super big deal. You shouldn't get raked over this but I dont like speculating on the price of anythinf anymore.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. The code came on one time then disappeared. Hasn’t been back on. Maybe it won’t be bad.

Back at you for a what was told. The wiring harness that goes into the bottom of the Def take has water intrusion. Has to be replaced. Module kit, new harness, refill, and complete service little over 1500.00. Sound about right?

I had to replace an exhaust temp sensor on my 2016 after the dealer did a forced regen that didn’t fix the problem. $1500-$1600

Im not sure how big of a tear up it is to change out that whole harness. Considering the DEF header on a dodge is > $700 by itself just for the part that sounds like a fair price to me, but like I said im not very familiar with the GMs.

Man I have had awesome luck with this truck so I don’t want to start a bash my brand. Buy why would they put that on the bottom
Of the truck with nothing but a skid plate between the elements and the unit…I pressure wash the bottom of my truck every time i get home from working in that muddy environment. The guy told me the 1/2 inch space between the harness and skid plate was completely packed with mud.

The header has to go on the bottom of the tank. It has a pump in it.
The location of the tank itself is what's stupid. Why they dont put that thing somewhere else, I'll never understand.

Thats a little less than i was quoted a few years ago for the same issue on my 16. Of course it was just out of warranty. I ended up deleting mine at that point and havnt looked back

If I could find someone to delete mine for less than 5g I would. The 18 and ups are expensive
