We will be heading off to France later this summer and have an event in Figeac which will occupy a couple days for us. We are doing a mini road trip starting in Bordeaux and making our way to Figeac. Bordeaux obviously has no shortage of places to go and wineries to visit. Does anyone have any experience with Figeac? I know it’s a long shot but this board never stops surprising me with the random experiences people have had with places that are off the beaten path. It is in the Occitane region so I know there should be plenty of history to explore. Thanks in advance for any intel.

I haven’t been to Figecc but I did spend a week exploring the Bordeaux region last year. If you want to visit a winery, you need to make arrangements in advance. It is not like California where you can drive up and down the highway and pop in for a tasting. They are not that tourist friendly over there.

Thanks for the heads up. Did you do any tastings/tours? Any you would recommend to someone who is more familiar with California/Oregon wines than French?

We were on a Viking Bordeaux river boat cruise. All of our visits were set up by Viking.

The first place I would recommend that you go is the charming medieval hill town of St. Emilion. There is a lot to see there and at the top of the hill there is a panoramic view of the surrounding vineyards.
There are a number of very nice wine bars and tasting rooms around town. One that we visited was Masion Galhaud . Their winery is out in the countryside but their cellars and tasting room are in the town. There is wine tasting in their cellars which are underground, carved into the ancient Roman limestone caves.
That takes care of the merlot based Bordeaux Right Bank wine region.

For the cabernet based Left Bank I would suggest finding a good tour with winery stops that will take you on a ride on the Route de Chateau in the Medoc. This is the wine hall of fame, passing some of the most famous wineries in the world.

i have stayed in Figeac at a horse stable farm situation visiting an old friend who moved to France after turning 18 and never came back. it's a charming little town. the people actually want to speak English bc they get to practice. the opposite of the bigger cities where they enjoy hearing me struggle with m 3rd grade level French. that said, it's considered polite to at least try to speak the language.

The region is the Truffle and Foie Gras capital of France, so keep that in mind. the wine in that Region is very good and boutique. there are a few groceries there where the cheese is exceptional and the produce was next level and affordable.

The town is very walkable and charming with the River and old winding streets and buildings. there are few museums and shops to entertain you during the day. the train to leave there is literally one car, so that was funny. we took a bigger train from Toulouse and it was a breeze, though the train depot in Toulouse was shady AF.

not much of a night life scene, but if you do your work during the day, you can have lovely, and i mean lovely, homecooked dinners with great quality food and wine with wonderful view of the rolling country side.

i hope this helps. enjoy your time in the Pyrenees.

And this is the reason I posted the question in the first place. Thank you for the info! We will be there for several days so will likely make some side trips as well as visiting some with our French friends (they are from the outskirts of Paris).

Thanks again! This place never ceases to amaze me.
