I've heard a few songs. Its was described to me as dead mall music, which I thought was interesting.

I don’t see that comparison. I think the the genre is mislabeled, personally. It reminds me more of a triphop/ambient/experimental variant. I’m usually a fave of the -wave subgenres, but I just don’t feel vaporwave.

Maybe not. But I think the genre has gotten so broad that the description no longer holds true

Some of it, sometimes. I tend to gravitate towards the Future Funk subgenre with Japanese city pop, upbeat tempos, and samples from other media.

I was in The Chimes for lunch a few years ago and heard a MIKAZUNI Big Wave track playing... surprised the hell out of me that someone else in BR had heard of them. Our server said it was feom another server's Spotify list.
