The 100 Years of LSU Basketball Thread - your memories

This is tough. I remember Derrick Taylor making that half court shot vs. Auburn to win the game with 4 seconds left (inbounds pass, 2 dribbles, half court shot, buzzer, swish, game over!).

I remember Rudy Macklin at the free throw line clapping his hands at the end of the game (game was won, I forget who... maybe Kentucky?) ref handed him the ball but he was so busy clapping and cheering, ref dropped ball in front of him. (It's weird the things you remember eh?)

I remember some of the greats of the late 70s and early 80s like John Williams, Jerry Reynolds, Nikita Wilson, Don Redden, Ricky Blanton, and Howard Carter.

I remember blowing out the favorite Kentucky by 30 pts at the half.

I also remember the game in the dome vs Georgetown when Don Redden (or was it Ricky Blanton?) scored on a tipped ball to win the game when Georgetown was heavily favored, tickets were cheap, and a record for attendance was broken.

These are just a few of the things that jump out at first thought. Oh, and don't forget the feud between Dale Brown and Bobby Knight. LOL!

I've only been keeping up with them since the early 2000s. So my best memory would be freshman year, watching LSU's run to the final four on the Herget Lobby big screen. Dmitches 3 against A&M, Tyrus Thomas blocking JJ Redick...

Fav game I ever went to was from that season against Florida. Pretty cool feeling to know you beat the eventual National Champs.

I don't have a particular memory....more like a bunch of memories from when I was a little kid. Although football is my favorite, it was basketball that got me to love LSU. My parents would take me to basketball games a few years before they brought me to football games. So I guess...to me....LSU basketball means the beginning of my love for LSU athletics.

This may not be the most important/favorite memory, but it's one that sticks out right now...

We host the 1988 SEC Tourney and man, was it ever a spectacle. This was back when the tourney rotated from campus to campus to the Omni.

Our first game was Friday afternoon - a 4 vs. 5 matchup with Will Perdue and Vandy, a team we had already beaten twice. We beat them again and it sets up a game with you guessed it - UK, a team that had handled us twice. That afternoon, after our game, some of the teams come into the PMAC - Auburn and Kentucky were sitting near my seats. I had a program and went to get it signed. My God, there are soooo many names on it...Ed Davender, Rex Chapman, Winston Bennett, Rob Locke, Chris Morris, and then, after LSU beats Vandy, I see Jose Vargas, Bernard Woodside, and Lyle Mouton down by the court, near the bleachers. I got them to sign, too.

The kicker? LSU football team was having spring practice. The following morning, beofre we play UK, I see several football players just hanging out - low and behold do we see Harvey Williams and the late great Eric Andolsek (who had already finished)just chilling. Harvey had a knee injury that he was reccoping from and said "I be back" when we asked him if he'd be 100 percent for the '88 season (which he wasn't). Andolsek was one of the nicest guys I had ever met. I had nothing but the SEC basketball program to get signed, so they obliged. I saw several other players near rhe stadium. Ron Sancho looked at me and said "What are you doing getting me to sign this for? Thsi ain't basketball." I also saw Eric Hill, Greg Jackson, Jimmy Young, and Darrell Phillips. Keep in mind I am a child, so this made my day.

That day, Rex Chapman proved why he was the best shooter in the world at the time, as we lost to a powerful UK team. LSU was a bubble team now for the NCAA. We had beaten a good Vandy team 3 times, number one Oklahoma, and finished 5th in a strong SEC. We also lost twice to Mississipi State - dead last in the SEC. The very next day, the selection show comes on and low and behold, we are the 2nd pairing announced in the East...playing G'town. We, of course, went on to lose that game.

Other highlites of that SEC tourney:

Seeing Rod Barnes play his last game at Ole Miss.
Seeing Dwayne Schnitzius up close and beinh horrified
Watching Rex Chapman put on a clinic
Seeing a Kentuckuy woman ask if some pralines were crawfish
Looking around the PMAC and realizing that Kentucky outnumbered even us.

Man...that was awful having to watch that part of the game. That ball was loose for what seemed like 60 seconds. I thought after Texas hit that three, we would lose in OT. Thank God for Big Baby and his long distance shooting!

Indeed. Had they played together longer it would have been different. These teams sort of dominoed off one another from '89 to '93, as one or two things/players just kept them out of reach of greatness. '89 would have been even better than 20-12 had Stanley Roberts, Harold Bourdreaux, and Mo Williamson not been Prop 48'ed. That would have given a lot of benefit to the following season. A good as '90 was, imagine Mike Hansen (sitting out as a transfer), Lenear Burns (redshirt, I believe), and Shawn Griggs (grades) coming off the bench to help out and provide more balance (esp when Shaq and Stanley had 3 fouls each, with 10 min left in the first half). Then, in '91, when things are rollin' along, we realize that CJ and Stanley coming back would have been huge...and Mo Williamson sat out again (do not remember why). Then, in '92, we look to have a good team, but Shaq's "fight" with Carlus Groves and Dale's stupid antics in the SEC tourney cost us big time. We probably go into the NCAA as a 4 instead of a 7. So, then in '93, Shaq might have come back (his dad urged him to get the degree and stay 4 years until Dale advised against it). We were a 10 seed, ousted by Kidd and Cal. With Shaq, who knows? So many close encounters with greatness during those years, but so many failed attempts to accomplish it. From '89 to '93 - CJ, Shaq, Stanley, Vernel, etc. - two wins in the NCAA tourney and 4 losses. No Sweet 16's.
