I'm leaning to Ortisei right now. It will be for 5 nights then we head to Bologna for 5 nights.

We'll have a car.

When are you going?

Winter ski trip? Or summer hiking?

I’m seriously eyeing the Dolomiti for a midsummer getaway.

Thinking:

- Fly into Venice or Verona (from AMS)
- 2 days in Vicenza (my former stomping grounds)
- Bus/train to Cortina and base out of there for 2-3 days.
- Bus/train to Ljubljana, Slovenia
- 1 full day Ljubljana
- 2 days Lake Bled
- 1-2 says back in Ljubljana
- Fly back home to AMS from Ljubljana

Has anyone based out of Cortina without a car and can comment on viability of doing so?

Yes having a car would be ideal, but I’m an EU resident which means I need to go through the process of obtaining a local license from my EU country of residence to be legally permitted to drive (EU-wide) - and in the Netherlands the licensing process is expensive, time consuming and the tests (practical and theory) notoriously difficult as they’re literally engineered to have a majority failure rate to limit the amount of new drivers on the road each year.

I can and have gotten rental agencies to rent to me under the guise of my NC state driver’s license, but that’s a game of roulette, any accidents and the insurance companies will dig and immediately void any outstanding claims, not to mention any legal action from local law enforcement should they pursue the matter on their side as well.

Apparently a lot of hotels give you a free bus/train pass for your stay in the area.

We are going late May early June. It depends on my awards flights. Ours is more of a site seeing tour than hiing although I am sure we will do some easier trails. We will stay in Ortisei.

The trip will be five nights in Ortisei followed by six nights in Bologna. From Bologna we can easily day trip to Modena, Parma, Padua and Ferrara plus other places if we'd like.

Sucks abour geettin your drivers license there. I know a lot of people here don't but for my piece of mind I will get my international drivers license. I'll only drive in the Dolomites. Everything in Bologna will be walking and the day trips we will use the train system.

It looks like I'm about 2-3 weeks from being able to book my flights on Emirates. Once that is done I'll really dig in to fleshing out the trip. It's been 7 years since I was in Italy (freaking Covid) and I'm excited to go back to one of my favorite countries.
