Because at one time virtually all the state schools were called Louisiana State University at “city”. Example: LSUNO was LSU New Orleans. Whereas “LSU” always denoted THE main campus in Baton Rouge.

Maybe my memory has gotten foggy over the years and I am just too lazy to research the individual schools, but this is what I remember – back when I walked 12 miles to school each way, and all uphill.

Don't forget the snow. It always snowed all the time 'back then' - more evidence of global warming.

eta - and at my school, it was uphill BOTH ways.

Cajun's couldn't spell Louisiana State, thus LSU was easier for them. It is what it is, which is the best acronym in college football.
