to Chinese parts and and components!! I wonder how they like those apples.

It’s amazing how the results of a USA election can almost instantly change the behavior of multinational corporations and the governments’ they bribe.

First, it’s worth remembering that in the fine print of the USMCA deal, Mexico and Canada must comply with North American parts origination for anything they want to manufacture for sale into the United States. Meaning, all trade manufacturers must either create their component parts domestically, or purchase them from the U.S, Mexico and Canada. It’s the core point of the USMCA trade agreement.

Secondly, in an aspect exclusive to the U.S. part of the deal that President Trump and USTR Lighthizer insisted upon, if either Canada or Mexico are deemed to be non-compliant with the agreement, the USA can cancel/override any trade agreement Mexico or Canada have with another nation. It’s a heavy accountability hammer securing the gate into the massive USA market.

Trump will demand compliance and it is what they FEAR!!

Mexico gained tens of thousands of jobs when U.S. and foreign automakers moved their plants to Mexico under the free trade pact to take advantage of much lower wages. But the idea that Chinese parts — or even whole cars — could be piggybacking on that arrangement to further hollow out the U.S. auto industry has enraged some people north of the border.

Labor inflation is killing Mexico. Hourly wages are over $8/hr and climbing.

When it takes 5 people to produce the same part as 1 American… they are in trouble.

Cars are way more reliable than they used to be. They can only go up so much before people can't afford them or decide they don't need them. Things are changing ever so slightly, and the automobile market is probably going to feel the biggest pinch.

Its a perfect storm. They raised prices drastically before and during the pandemic and made record profits. They cut out high volume low profit vehicles. Margins over volume was the way forward in the short term.

Now these fartsniffers have inventory rotting on the lots because many people can't afford cars with an average price of $50k and higher interest rates.

Automakers pissed away billions on evs thinking if you build it they will come. The Lightning's poor sales proved that was just a cool line from a movie and not a good business philosophy for your entire product line. Eventually evs will gain more market share but you can't artificially create a market by just deciding that's the only market you will supply.

The same type of thing happened in the 70s. US manufacturers ignored external realities and built cars that people didn't want and Japanese manufacturers filled the void.

The first company to come to this conclusion again will survive and thrive and the others will not.
