Amtrak in VA

How’s the Amtrak around Williamsburg and Richmond? We’ve got a class trip in the spring and thinking about flying back to Alabama rather than spend another whole day on a charter bus. I was looking at rental cars and flights and stumbled upon Amtrak when searching for airport shuttles. Seems like it’s one stop between Williamsburg and Richmond. The catch is it leaves around 6 AM but that opens up several flight options. We could see parts of Richmond and fly home in the afternoon or just head straight to the airport and catch a morning flight.

Is the question about the area around the Richmond Amtrak station or the travel from Williamsburg to Richmond?
The downtown Richmond station is located in the Shockoe Bottom area of the city. Getting Ubers to get around shouldn't be a problem. To get really anywhere you gotta go uphill (hence Bottom) so take that into consideration. St John's Church and the Poe Museum are walkable but uphill. The Capitol Building is walkable but uphill. The American Civil War Museum is walkable and doesn't necessarily require walking uphill. The VMFA and Virginia Museum of History & Culture will require transportation.

Sort of both. I see there are two stations. One is a little closer to the airport but if there’s nothing to see there we’d get off at other one. The only time we’ve taken Amtrak was the route from Birmingham to New Orleans. That took forever and stopped a ton. This route looked like we’d get on in Williamsburg and get off at Richmond with nothing in between.

The Downtown station would be best though I don't know if there are more train options than to the Staples Mill station. There's not much touristy things to do around the Staples Mill station other than the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Be aware that if you plan to go on a weekend then expect for downtown Richmond to be dead and food options may be limited. There should be a lot more going on in the neighborhood areas though.
