Win with Winners.

A few weeks ago I read an online article and the interviewee articulated the thought of “Win with Winners”. I didn’t think about the statement at the time and didn’t think to note who it was, but in the time since then it has continued to impact my thinking as I look at my current holdings and analyze past mistakes and triumphs in the stock market. Too often, I have tried to overthink things and pick “the dog with the fewest fleas”. In today’s market, more than ever, it seems like a few stocks are driving things and it doesn’t pay to get cute with exotic small cap plays. The philosophy of profiting from popular, money making companies isn’t new or radical but it’s what I needed to hear. Looking back, it’s how I’ve made some of my biggest profits AND avoided huge mistakes. Just thought I’d throw that out there. Comments?

if you don't mind, please list 10 or so of the winners of the next few years

The problem is forecasting the future of the first trait, not the second. You can make educated guesses about future profitability, possible growth/expansion, and overall market potential. It’s REALLY hard to forecast future popularity and hype.
I’ll provide an easy and obvious example: who would have guessed Elon’s decision to start making open and obvious moves against the establishment, to the detriment of some of his popularity and fortune? That same sort of heel turn could happen with any “popular” company at any time. Maybe you can ride the wave for a few percentage points, but there’s no real skill in picking entry/exit points for these plays.

I bet the median stock in this list will underperform the market.
I’d say the same of most (all) lists.
The beauty of stocks though is one winner can outweigh 9 losers. It’s just math. Downside is limited if you’re long. Upside is uncapped.
