Here is the list, in chronological order, excluding Bo Rein.

Dietzel
McClendon
Stovall
Arnsparger
Archer
Hallman
Dinardo
Saban
Miles

If you choose, rank them, based solely on their tenure at LSU, from best (lowest number) to worst (highest number).

Here's my list:

1. McClendon
2. Dietzel
3t. Miles
3t. Saban
5. Arnsparger
6. Dinardo
7. Stovall
8. Archer
9. Hallman

just take out the tie and put Miles above Saban and your list is pretty much on point.

Believe me, I really want to. I wanted this season to make it clear cut. But it hasn't. I have to see it out through a fifth full season. I'm very optimistic that I can put Miles securely in 3rd after next season. In fact, Miles could leapfrog Dietzel into second place with a 2009 that resembles 2007.

i agree with your list. the only change id make is maybe put saban alone at 3 after this year. with another good year though miles can jump into the 2 spot

In all fairness, if Archer inherited the horrible team he left Curley, his four year record would have been just as bad if not worse. The program went from top 10 caliber to a shell of its former self in four short years under Archer. His own assistants were telling the athletic department that he wasn't capable. The program spiraled completely out of control.

To get fired from coaching a high school team in Alabama pretty much lands you on the bottom of the pile.

1. Dietzel C..A+, R..B+, O..C
2. Saban C..A, R..A+, O..D+
3. Miles C..B, R..A, O..B+
4. McClendon C..B, R..B, O..A+
5. Arnsparger C..A+, R..B, O..C+
6. Stovall C..C+, R..A+, O..B
7. Dinardo C..C, R..B, O..B
8. Archer C..C, R..B, O..B-
9. Hallman C..C-, R..D+, O..C-

C= Football coaching
R= Recruiting
O= all other areas

Notice my only 2 D's are Hallman's recruiting (he missed out on a who's who out of Louisiana) and Saban's other (due to his temper and handling his last days at LSU).

I came very close to giving Hallman a D+ in other too, most know why.

You should see the thread I started on the Coaching Changes board where I asked if Hallman was the worst hire in big league football history. There were 4 or 5 to 1 arguing that Archer was worse. That's partly what prompted my tossing this question out to the Rant at large.

Amen, my brother, "how the hell is hallman not dead last?" on EVERYBODY's list.

Nick Saban is #1 without a doubt. Having him tied with Miles is an insult.

I understand that a lot of our younger fans and "newer" fans have a strong emotional attachment to the current coach at Alabama. Clearly many on the Rant agree with you. However, objectively what is it that he accomplished at LSU that, for example Coach Dietzel and Coach Miles did not, from a coaching standpoint, relative to other factors?

Where do I begin? He brought the fans back. He brought the life back. He even brought a new facility here.
