The Jones grand slam was the worst call I ever heard.
This I don't understand either.
Here are the exact words of his call:
"O'Brien comes set with the bases loaded. 2-2 pitch. Swung on, high in the air. Going towards the wall in left field is Wallschmidt, and JARED JONES WITH A GRAND SLAM TOWERING SHOT TO LEFT has delivered the hit the Tigers needed! The grand slam will make it six nothing LSU. No mustache, no problem for Jared Jones! His first hit here in Hoover and it's a big one!"
You have to understand the context in two specific areas:
1 - this field is massive and balls don't carry out of here the same way they do in Alex Box. So off the bat the ball looked like a fly ball to deep left.
2 - they've referenced an odd vantage point several times, and we don't really know what they can see in terms of height and angles. So they have to watch the fielders and try to describe what is happening.
I will grant that the commentary was fairly monotone with the bases loaded and no outs going up to that hit. But the call of the hit was energetic and excited and appropriate for the moment. And it was just as energetic and excited for Travinski's home run a few batters later.
