quote:
What inspired Toby Keith to write 'Don't Let the Old Man In'? The song was inspired by a conversation Toby Keith had with Clint Eastwood in May 2017. The two shared a golf cart at Eastwood’s golf tournament in California, and the Oscar-winning director mentioned he was leaving the next day for three-month shoot to make a movie called The Mule. "How do you do it, man?" Keith asked. "I just don’t let the old man in,” Eastwood responded. From there, Keith got to writing. After hearing the song, Eastwood wound up putting it in The Mule."
I cannot find it but I read an article or saw an interview where he said he had a cold or sore throat when he recorded what he thought would be a demo but Clint liked it so much he told Toby he wanted to use that version as is.
