Just a proving ground.
Once combat aircraft are fully autonomous, there is no reason for all the onboard life support and survivability equipment for the obsolete organic pilots. Either the same basic platform can carry more ordnance, or, purpose-built AI aircraft will have much greater range and capability.
The future is now.
