I officiated football for 25 years. My favorite table was the off duty St Petersburg Police table. In Clearwater an old man and his wife were unloading groceries. She went inside first, where she was attacked by a burglar. The old man came up, got his gun and shot the burglar. Apparently it only stunned him. The old man tended to hi wife, but laid down the snub nosed .38 ......the crook picked up the gun and shot the old man killing him.

We discussed this ......The cops all said the same thing I was hearing from the law office my wife worked for ......."Empty the damned gun." Tell the police that in your excitement you fired until there were no bullets left. Make sure two are in the head ......say no more.......
