Lot of that has to do with how teams are pitching him with and without runners on base. With bases empty, teams are attacking him with fastballs and trying not to walk him with Jones behind him. This leads to him getting some pitches to hit and hitting some solo HR.

With bases loaded, teams are throwing him off speed trying not to get beat by him. Instead of being patient and working some good ABs, he's swinging out of his shoes at balls 6" low or outside trying to do damage...just hasn't been able to do it often enough.
