I thought Robert E Lee was the better general? The war would’ve been over a lot sooner if he would’ve been in command of the union army?

Based on what? If we were to do this like a head coach, using wins, losses, and ties, his battlefield record as a commanding general would have been 5 wins, 6 losses, and 9 ties (.475).

That isn't a foregone conclusion. Lee suffered an early defeat in the Western Virginia Campaign of 1861 and was banished to building up coastal defenses in the Carolinas. It took a while for a lot of these top commanders to get used to commanding large armies in the field as most were just junior officers prior to the war's outbreak with no experience in large-scale strategic movements.
