I'm copying my post from the big thread:

Troy Franklin 6'3" 187 lb WR--Oregon

He's tall, but obviously not a big body guy, which a lot of people think we need. But I think Wilson can be that guy to some extent. Along with our TEs, and I think, AT Perry. But Franklin is tall, which we lack in our top 2 WR. But he's fast, and more importantly, he was productive for 2 years:

'23--81 catches for 1383 yards and 14 TDs. 17.1 yards/rec

'22--61 catches for 891 yards and 9 TDs. 14.6 yards/rec

And despite his frame, doesn't miss games. Played in 14 as a freshman and 13 in both his SO. and JR. seasons. Maybe there's something with his medicals, though? Why else would he still be there

I keep referencing PFF's grades, but that's nothing to do with my trusting them more than other sites--I just pulled it up Thursday and haven't closed the tab. But they have Franklin as the BPA on their big board today, but he was ranked as their #5 WR and #29 player overall. Here's what they say about him:

quote:

Franklin, a former four-star wide receiver recruit, played in all 14 games in his true freshman season at Oregon and started every game in his sophomore and junior seasons. He is a smooth strider as a vertical receiver. He was the top explosive-play pass catcher on Oregon’s offense the past two seasons. His calling card is his ability as a vertical threat, both from the slot and the outside. Over the past two seasons, he diversified his releases and his general footwork to create separation in more ways than just through vertical speed. His play strength is a concern when fighting through the contact window and on contested catches.

I think you add him to Olave, Shaheed, Perry (who we still don't know exactly what we're getting with, but feel pretty good so far) and Wilson, and you have one of the deepest and most explosive WR groups in the NFL What would you be willing to give up for him? Assuming there's nothing going on with his medicals or off-the-field stuff. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd give up next year's 3 and one of our 5ths to take him at the top of the 4th today. Turn a relative weakness (depth-wise) into a strength.

And it gives us 2 very strong position groups in WR and CB (for now, anyway). I'm ok with giving up next year's 3rd, because I think we're gonna get one back for Latt before next year's draft. Day 3 picks are crapshoots, but I think Franklin's measurable plus his multi-year production at a high level P5 school mitigates the risk. Unless there's something going on with him we don't know about. Thoughts? Or are y'all cool with just waiting till Round 5 and seeing what's left?

CBS also has Franklin as their top ranked guy left on offense. Summarize:

Tall and fast (4.41?) and can go up and get the ball. More of a weaver, not crisp in and out of his breaks (which could be a plus for him at only 21-years-old--there's room for development there). Biggest knock on him is he needs to add strength to be able to get off the line better, but does have the frame to add good weight. And is still able to to make contested catches. Surprised he's still there.
