If you're really fascinated by it, you could always go back to read up on Aristotle's three divisions of rhetoric (ethos, pathos, logos) and expand into other areas of rhetorical appeals (kairos for example). I would also recommend reading about Lloyd Bitzer's work on the rhetorical situation, which conceptualizes the audience as being equally important in the construction of a text as the author is.
