Most divers will carry a knife or dive tool as a standard part of their equipment. Don’t know if this guy had one. Maybe he couldn’t reach it. Maybe the screwdriver is what he had handy or already in his hand.

I’m sure he carries a knife, every diver I know considers it standard equipment. Along with a knife mounted ant my chest I also carry a pair of trauma shears (in case of getting snagged on a line with steel leader, and usually a back up knife on my calf.

I’m guessing the screwdriver was attached to his wrist with a lanyard, sounds like it was his only option.
