At the high school where I work, they always say “Please stand for the dress code check and the pledge.” I can’t force them to stand for the pledge, but I can make them stand for the dress code check … during the pledge. I’ve never had a problem.

Very clever and I like it, but it's sad that we have to go to those measures so they will stand for the pledge. When I started teaching almost 20 years ago, every student stood for the pledge and did so proudly. The problem is when parents start telling their children that they don't have to respect the flag, it permeates to other parts of their lives, which is why some students think it's okay to disrespect teachers and anyone in authority.
