Why would 5G be necessary?

The higher speed frequencies that come into use have much smaller wavelengths. The smaller the wavelength, the easier things become antennas. Low frequencies have large wavelengths and require large antennas (ignoring fractal based antennas for now). Higher frequencies with shorter wavelengths require shorter/smaller antennas for transmission AND reception.

So as these wavelengths get smaller, anything conductive that may have been too small previously, even biological matter, can start absorbing the energy from the RF transmissions. The impact of absorbing such energy is highly controversial because very little in depth studies have been done on the smaller wavelengths. Most historical data is based on anywhere from 60Hz to maybe 2Ghz. The biological impacts on frequencies above 2Ghz is a bit short last time I looked (until you get up to like X-rays and nuclear decay radiation energy levels/frequencies).
