If anyone has seen James May's series where he goes to Japan, he interviews a Japanese-American history professor who makes this exact point.
He makes it clear that Japan were the aggressors, and suggests the victims didn't die in vain because the attacks allowed Japan to ultimately survive as a nation.
Interestingly, I heard amazon cut the interview out of that episode.
